A Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) member of BERSATU has urged Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to relinquish his position as party president, with Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin recommended to act as deputy president in his stead.
MPT member Yunus Nurdin said it is appropriate for Muhyiddin to step down amid the ongoing turmoil and internal disputes affecting BERSATU and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, echoing suggestions previously made by other MPT members.
“As previously emphasised, MPT BERSATU denies any claims that matters discussed by Muhyiddin with PAS leadership were brought up, debated, or approved in any official MPT BERSATU meetings, including allegations regarding proposals to abolish the PN chairman position,” Yunus said in a statement today.
He added that Muhyiddin’s unilateral statements and actions had created political confusion, undermined internal party trust, and could potentially strain strategic relationships within PN, thereby affecting the coalition’s stability, which should be based on consultation and collective decisions.
Yunus, who is also BERSATU Division Chief for Libaran, said the current PN crisis requires leadership that is mature, credible, and capable of uniting all coalition components in a principled and disciplined manner.
He highlighted Hamzah as the most suitable candidate to assume the party presidency, citing his authoritative leadership, political experience, and ability to resolve internal PN conflicts, strengthen BERSATU’s leadership structure, and repair relations among coalition parties.
“Hamzah is seen as a highly experienced leader capable of taking on BERSATU’s leadership responsibilities, rebuilding internal party trust, and restoring strategic relationships within PN in a more structured, disciplined, and long-term stable manner,” he said.
Yunus added that Muhyiddin should focus on his ongoing legal matters, including the Jana Wibawa case scheduled for March, so that party leadership and coalition management are not further burdened by prolonged controversies.
He stressed that PN must be developed as a cohesive and stable political coalition trusted by the public, particularly ahead of the 16th General Election (PRU-16), rather than remaining mired in leadership conflicts, contradictory statements, and internal trust crises.
“BERSATU and PN will remain relevant as a national leadership alternative only if the coalition’s leadership is anchored on integrity, clear direction, collective decisions, and genuine unity, rather than perception politics and unilateral actions,” Yunus said.
