Bersatu Respects Muhyiddin’s Decision To Step Down As PN Chairman

Date:

The Bersatu supreme council has expressed respect for party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision to resign as chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the council accepted the decision on the basis of principle and responsibility after listening to Muhyiddin’s explanation during a meeting held last night.

However, he said the council also held an in-depth discussion on PN’s future direction in preparation for the 16th General Election, focusing on advancing moderate, progressive and people-centric policies.

Mohamed Azmin stressed that Bersatu remains a principled, consistent and loyal partner within PN.

“This cooperation will continue to be upheld to ensure the stability and strength of the coalition,” he said in a statement today.

Following the meeting, Muhyiddin said his resignation as PN chairman would be discussed and finalised at a future PN supreme council meeting.

Mohamed Azmin also said the council expressed regret over allegations that Bersatu had breached the understanding within PN following the political crisis in Perlis, firmly denying any involvement in the leadership issue in the state.

He said the council had heard an explanation from Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah regarding the prolonged political situation and was satisfied with the clarification provided by the state Bersatu chief.

“The council advised the menteri besar and the state leadership to continue safeguarding unity, harmony and cooperation within Perlis PN, while upholding the ruler’s advice to develop Perlis for the welfare of the people and the prosperity of the state,” he said.

Mohamed Azmin added that the council welcomed the president’s call for Bersatu members to remain disciplined and steadfast.

“Members must practise mutual respect and resolve differences wisely and maturely behind closed doors in the interest of the party,” he said.
