British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is reportedly facing a fresh clash with US President Donald Trump as the UK prepares to announce sanctions against Israel over settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is expected to unveil the measures as early as today, with the Labour government seeking to regain support from pro-Gaza voters it has lost in recent years.
However, the move could trigger a backlash from Washington, which has reportedly been angered by Britain’s increasingly hardline position towards Israel.
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee recently criticised the Labour government, accusing it of being consumed by “Jew hate”.
“The Jew hate of their government knows no boundaries and knows no facts,” he said.
A Downing Street spokesperson rejected the allegation, saying the government remained committed to protecting Jewish communities in Britain.
“We’re committed to protecting Jewish communities in the UK, and continue to engage with community leaders and groups,” the spokesperson said.
The government also said it was investing almost £318 million over three years to protect Jewish communities, tackle antisemitic extremism and hostile state activity, and address antisemitism in schools, universities and local communities.
The latest development comes after Burnham and Trump spoke on Monday about the Israel-Gaza conflict.
According to Downing Street, the Prime Minister reiterated Britain’s commitment to peace and security in the Middle East, including support for a two-state solution.
He also stressed the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.
The expected sanctions against Israel would centre on Israeli settlements in the West Bank, amid growing tensions over Britain’s approach to the conflict.
The move also follows Britain’s recent decision to take a tougher stance on Israel, which has drawn criticism from some US officials.
The proposed measures come as the Labour government faces pressure to demonstrate its position on the Israel-Gaza conflict while managing its relationship with Washington.
