Canada is exploring opportunities to deepen cooperation with Sarawak, particularly in sustainable mining, energy development, and emerging industries.
Canadian High Commissioner to Malaysia Jodi Rae Robinson highlighted these potential areas of collaboration following a courtesy visit to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Discussions focused on how Canadian expertise could support the state’s long-term development priorities.
A major topic raised during the meeting was Canada’s “Towards Sustainable Mining” framework, which Malaysia is currently reviewing as part of its strategy for managing critical minerals. Robinson noted that Sarawak has placed strong emphasis on ensuring mining activities are conducted responsibly and with environmental safeguards.
“I know the Premier has very strong feelings about ensuring that any mining is environmentally sustainable,” she told reporters, adding that Canada hopes to assist Sarawak in developing its mining sector in a responsible manner.
The visit also aimed to strengthen engagement between Canadian companies and the Sarawak government. Robinson said Canada possesses strong capabilities in sectors aligned with Sarawak’s development plans, including energy, agriculture, and aerospace.
Another point of discussion centred on how Sarawak can maximise its abundant power resources as the state continues expanding its energy sector. Robinson also commended Sarawak’s growing focus on hydrogen energy, describing it as a promising contributor to the global clean energy transition.
“Canada also has its own hydrogen industry. What Sarawak has been doing is incredible,” she said, adding that she has been impressed by the state’s industrial progress and the government’s strategic vision during her visits.
