The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) is calling on Malaysians to start growing their own vegetables immediately, warning of a significant price hike on the horizon. CAP Education Officer NV Subbarow revealed that farmers in Cameron Highlands have already signaled a potential 50% price surge in the short term, driven by rising production costs linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
According to CAP, the agricultural sector is currently battling a “triple threat” of rising overheads:
- Fertilizer Costs: Prices for essential nutrients have spiked due to global supply chain disruptions.
- Logistics: Increased fuel prices and shipping insurance are driving up transportation fees.
- Labor: Foreign farm workers are demanding higher wages to cope with the rising cost of living.
While prices may eventually stabilize to a 30% increase, Subbarow believes the future remains challenging for consumers. To combat this, CAP suggests that “urban farming” is the most practical solution for Malaysian households to reduce grocery bills.
Expert Tips For Home Gardening:
Subbarow emphasized that space is not a barrier to self-sufficiency. Even those living in apartments or flats can maintain a productive kitchen garden:
- Small Spaces/Balconies: Use recycled milk cartons, juice bottles, or small containers for shallow-root plants like mint, pegaga, kesum, spinach, and kailan.
- Deep-Root Plants: Utilize 5-liter oil tins, biscuit tins, or 20-liter water bottles to grow okra (bendi), eggplant (terung), and chilies.
- Cost-Cutting Fertilizer: Practice composting by turning kitchen food waste into organic fertilizer, eliminating the need to buy chemical alternatives.
- CAP’s Success: In their own urban garden, CAP is currently harvesting bottle gourds (labu air) weighing between 7kg and 10kg each, proving that high yields are possible in small urban settings.
“As long as there is sunlight and water, anyone can harvest their own greens,” Subbarow stated. CAP urges the public to view home gardening not just as a hobby, but as a necessary survival strategy in an increasingly expensive food market.
