Chong Chieng Jen Calls For 30% Petronas Stake For Sarawak To End Oil Dispute

Date:

DAP Sarawak Member of Parliament, Chong Chieng Jen, has suggested that Sarawak should be granted at least 30% equity and board representation in Petronas to resolve the ongoing oil and gas dispute and ensure a fair share of Malaysia’s petroleum resources.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat during the 2026 National Address debate, Chong addressed the renewed conflict between Petronas and Sarawak’s oil company, Petros, urging both parties to work toward a long-term solution.

He noted that despite multiple reconciliation agreements and joint statements signed by the Prime Minister and the Sarawak Premier, the two companies are now back in court, reigniting the dispute.

Chong argued that conflicts over shared natural resources are inevitable if both parties pursue the same assets separately. He emphasized that court rulings, which result in a clear winner and loser, are not the best way to address such disputes. A one-sided outcome—whether Sarawak wins or loses—could harm the country’s overall interests.

To resolve the matter, he proposed that the federal government grant Sarawak at least 30% equity in Petronas, enabling the state to receive dividends and have board representation while allowing Petronas to maintain primary control.

The proposal drew the interest of the Minister of Works and Member of Parliament for Kapar, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who asked for clarification on how the 30% figure was determined.

Chong explained that since the passing of the 1976 Petroleum Development Act, Sarawak has only received a 5% petroleum and gas levy annually, far below its contribution as the country’s largest oil and gas producer. He added that the 30% equity would not only cover profit dividends from Petronas but also entitle Sarawak to revenue from its global assets.

“Equity participation, rather than a zero-sum confrontation, protects national interests while supporting Sarawak’s economic development, creating a win-win solution,” he said.

Chong first proposed this idea in Parliament last year, advocating for Sarawak to hold at least 30% equity and board representation in Petronas to help resolve the ongoing oil rights disputes between the two companies.
