Journalists should be given the necessary space to carry out their duties as long as they comply with regulations and do not breach the law, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. The statement comes amid growing concern over press freedom and the treatment of media personnel during on-ground reporting.
Commenting on an incident in Cheras, where three reporters were allegedly instructed by authorities to delete images taken while covering an assignment, Fahmi expressed disappointment, noting that such a situation should not have occurred if the individuals had clearly identified themselves as members of the media.
“I regret what has happened. Journalists must be given full space to perform their duties,” he said, adding that he has yet to receive a complete report on the matter. He also confirmed that he will reach out to the Royal Malaysia Police to obtain further clarification on the incident.
Fahmi stressed that, in principle, media practitioners should be allowed to operate without interference as long as they present themselves as working journalists. He reiterated the importance of maintaining a professional environment that respects both law enforcement duties and press responsibilities.
Earlier, both Gerakan Media Merdeka and the National Union of Journalists Malaysia voiced concern over repeated incidents involving journalists and police officers. Reports indicated that the three affected journalists, from Chinese-language newspapers, were covering follow-up developments linked to a riot at a karaoke centre when they were allegedly ordered to erase all photos and videos captured at the scene.
On a separate issue involving alleged harassment of Azam Baki, Fahmi said the matter has been left entirely to the authorities for investigation. He noted that he has only reviewed the case through media coverage and press briefings, emphasising that any action should be determined by the relevant enforcement bodies if violations are found.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Fadil Marsus confirmed that three individuals were arrested for allegedly being involved in a protest that disrupted a public event attended by Azam. The disturbance took place at Dewan Tun Dr Ismail, located within the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, where a previously calm academic forum turned chaotic after a group suddenly staged a protest.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 2.40pm when two men were seen holding placards bearing the words “Tangkap Azam Baki” and “Azam Baki Simbol Reformati” during a keynote speech, drawing attention and causing disruption at the event.
