Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called on Johoreans living and working outside the state to return home and cast their ballots in the 16th Johor State Election on 11 July, describing the vote as crucial for the state’s future.
Speaking at a charity dinner on Thursday night, Fahmi, who also serves as Pakatan Harapan (PH) Communications Director, said the election would determine whether Johor continues to enjoy close cooperation between the state administration and the Federal Government.
He argued that political stability was essential for attracting investment and delivering long-term development, adding that Johor had benefited significantly from the Federal Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over the past three years.
“We want a capable state government that can work closely with the Prime Minister,” Fahmi said, claiming that Johor had received greater federal support than Selangor and several other states. He added that the state’s achievements were closely linked to the country’s stable federal administration.
Fahmi also appealed to voters to give PH candidates the opportunity to serve, with the coalition contesting all 56 Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats. He said previous PH representatives were unable to complete their work effectively following the change of government, referring to the political upheaval commonly described as the “backdoor government” episode.
Looking ahead, Fahmi said PH was committed to delivering a stable administration that could work hand in hand with the Federal Government to attract more investments and improve public services for Johoreans.
He also pledged that PH would conduct a clean and respectful election campaign despite facing what he described as provocations and intimidation tactics from political opponents. Fahmi urged party supporters not to be discouraged, saying they should remain confident in pursuing a better future through the coalition.
The event was also attended by DAP Secretary-General and Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, PH Johor election machinery director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, as well as several PH candidates contesting seats in the Muar area.
The Johor state election will see 172 candidates competing for 56 state seats, with early voting scheduled for 7 July before polling day on 11 July.
