Fake PM Claim Goes Viral: MCMC Launches Investigation Into Doctored Utusan Post

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a viral Facebook post featuring a doctored Utusan Malaysia news image that falsely claimed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim admitted to mistakes in US agreements.

The manipulated image, which included the Utusan Malaysia logo, has been confirmed as fake and deemed potentially misleading to the public. Authorities have summoned the individual suspected of uploading the post, who provided a statement at the Alor Gajah district police headquarters in Melaka.

MCMC confirmed that Utusan Malaysia denied publishing the report, clarifying the unauthorised use of its name and logo. A mobile phone and SIM card were seized for digital forensic analysis.

The probe is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment up to two years, or both upon conviction.

MCMC urged the public to verify information before sharing, especially content misusing media logos, warning that spreading false information can undermine legitimate news sources and result in legal consequences.
