Malaysia will continue using every available international platform to increase pressure on Israel to end its military operations in Palestine and Lebanon, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan told Parliament.
He said Putrajaya remains committed to pursuing diplomatic efforts through international bodies such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the United Nations and Brics in an effort to push for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
According to Mohamad, Malaysia is intensifying its diplomatic engagement at the global level to ensure the international community continues holding Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.
The minister revealed that he recently held discussions with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly, to strengthen efforts aimed at maintaining pressure on Israel within the UN system.
“If possible, we want to secure support from more than 140 countries at the United Nations General Assembly. Such a result would send a strong message and increase pressure on Israel to halt its aggression in Lebanon, stop the atrocities in Gaza and cease incursions into the West Bank,” he said during the Dewan Rakyat sitting.
Mohamad was responding to a question regarding Malaysia’s role following the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing military tensions in the Middle East.
He stressed that Malaysia would continue supporting diplomatic initiatives designed to restore stability in the region, warning that prolonged conflict carries serious consequences not only for the Middle East but also for the global economy.
The foreign minister noted that while the United States had agreed to the 14-point memorandum with Iran, Israel continues to pursue military actions in the region.
“Israel does not want peace and stability in the region because it has its own interests. That is why the international community must continue applying pressure,” he said.
Mohamad claimed that Washington had shifted its position and agreed to pursue diplomatic engagement with Iran despite previously adopting a more confrontational stance.
Malaysia was among the first countries to publicly support the signing of the memorandum and has consistently backed international efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Gulf region.
He also highlighted Malaysia’s support for international resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution 2817 concerning the Gulf and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where Malaysia acted as a co-sponsor.
“Malaysia will not remain silent. We will continue raising our voice against what is happening in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon,” he said.
The minister stressed that although Malaysia may not always be in a position to directly sponsor every legal or diplomatic initiative, the country remains committed to supporting international efforts that promote peace, stability and humanitarian protection.
As tensions continue to shape global politics and economic conditions, Malaysia says it will remain actively engaged in diplomatic channels to advocate for an end to the violence and a sustainable political solution in the region.
