Former PM Muhyiddin Pleads Not Guilty To Seven Corruption And Money Laundering Charges

Date:

Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of corruption and money laundering at the Sessions Court today.

The 78-year-old Pagoh MP is accused of using his position to obtain bribes amounting to RM232.5 million in four counts, linked to the Jana Wibawa project and involving three companies and one individual. The alleged offences took place at the Prime Minister’s Office between March 1, 2020, and August 20, 2021, under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009. Conviction could lead to up to 20 years in prison and a fine of at least five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is greater.

In addition, Muhyiddin faces three counts of receiving RM200 million in proceeds from illegal activities, allegedly deposited into Bersatu’s bank accounts between February 2021 and July 2022. These charges fall under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, with a maximum sentence of 15 years and heavy fines upon conviction.

The prosecution is led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, while the defence team is headed by senior lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik.

Last October 7, the Attorney General’s Chambers rejected Muhyiddin’s application to have all charges dropped.
