Government Confirms MyDigital ID Won’t Replace MyKad for Security, Immigration Services

Date:

The government has clarified that MyDigital ID will not be the only method for identity verification for security or immigration-related services, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah explained that MyDigital ID is a national digital identity system designed to provide secure access to government online services, but it does not replace MyKad. He emphasised that individuals with limited access to digital devices, internet connectivity, or digital skills—including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, rural communities, and Orang Asli—will continue to receive services.

“In police-related matters, alternative verification methods such as MyKad, passports, physical identity documents, and manual checks will remain valid,” he said. Face-to-face verification at police district headquarters and post offices will continue, supported by designated officers, particularly for rural residents who prefer not to use digital services.

Dr Shamsul Anuar also addressed data security concerns, noting that MyDigital ID information is handled according to national cybersecurity standards and in compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Access to sensitive data is restricted to specially trained officers, with safeguards like two-factor authentication, secure logins, and strict operating procedures in place.

“Officers under the respective ministries give serious attention to protecting personal data to prevent misuse, especially for vulnerable groups such as senior citizens,” he added.
