The opposition has said that Malaysians have valid reasons to be angry following the latest increase in diesel prices, which has reached a record high.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said that last week, diesel prices rose by 80 sen, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had asked the public to understand the situation.
“Today, it has gone up again by 50 sen to RM6.02, the highest in history. This increase has created a ripple effect that is burdening the people,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
“YAB Prime Minister, please understand why the people are angry,” he added.
Earlier, the retail price of diesel in Peninsular Malaysia increased to RM6.02 per litre for the period of April 2 to April 8, following ongoing global energy tensions.
This marked an increase of 50 sen compared to the previous rate of RM5.52 per litre.
The Ministry of Finance said the global energy crisis has pushed Brent crude oil prices up by more than 40 per cent, exceeding US$100 per barrel.
