Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has clarified that his use of the term “divorce” when discussing Sarawak’s position in Malaysia was not political rhetoric, but rather a call to end disputes between the Peninsula and the state.
The Kapit MP and Minister of Works said the matter has been settled and was never intended to cause misunderstandings.
Nanta, who is also Secretary-General of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), explained that the phrase was used metaphorically to emphasize the importance of living in harmony, maintaining peace, and focusing on improving economic management for the well-being of the people.
“I never intended to suggest that we want to divorce. It was merely an expression,” he said.
He added that the real message was about prioritizing harmony and focusing on initiatives that can improve the lives of Malaysians, rather than wasting time in disputes. He made the remarks during a press conference after officiating the Handover of Acceptance Letters (SST) for the Sibu Prison construction project in Sarawak today.
Nanta was responding to widespread criticism following an interview with a radio station in which he used the term “divorce” while addressing political tensions between Sarawak and the Peninsula, particularly over issues of race, religion, and governance.
“If you listen to the full statement, my message is clear — it’s about my love for the country and my desire to protect Malaysia,” he said.
“I love Malaysia. That is the essence of it. But some have chosen to take a small part of my statement and interpret it in their own way. That is their right, and I do not wish to argue over it,” he added.
Addressing claims that the remarks were being used as political leverage ahead of the state elections, Nanta said the interpretation is up to others.
“For me, it was a spontaneous statement, not meant to be used as political material. However, if it reminds everyone to avoid conflicts and live in harmony as Malaysians, then that is a positive outcome,” he said.
