Jamal Md Yunos’ Home Raided: 14 Assets Seized Over RM66K Legal Debt

Date:

A total of 14 assets belonging to Sungai Besar UMNO chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos were seized from his residence in Ampang Jaya on Wednesday after High Court bailiffs were authorised to forcibly enter the premises.

The writ of seizure and sale of movable property was obtained by Seputeh Member of Parliament Datuk Teresa Kok, who is the judgment creditor in the case, with Jamal named as the judgment debtor.

The enforcement action was carried out to recover outstanding legal costs amounting to RM66,061.85, stemming from a defamation suit filed by Teresa against Jamal nine years ago. Jamal, 56, had accused Teresa, 62, of misusing funds from the Selangor state foundation Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas).

In a media statement, Teresa’s lawyer, Datuk Sankara Nair, said the seized items would be auctioned on a date to be determined. He added that the items consisted of household goods.

Sankara said a High Court assistant registrar and bailiffs arrived at Jamal’s residence to execute the writ, accompanied by police officers and another lawyer representing Teresa. Forced entry was ordered after occupants failed to respond despite repeated attempts by officers to gain access to the house.

On July 30, 2024, the Federal Court in Putrajaya dismissed Jamal’s application for leave to appeal against a High Court decision ordering him to pay RM300,000 in damages to Teresa. Sankara confirmed that Jamal has since paid the RM300,000 compensation.

Previously, on July 26, 2022, High Court judge Datuk Mohd Arief Emran Arifin ordered Jamal to pay damages and RM50,000 in legal costs.

Teresa filed the defamation suit on April 6, 2017, alleging that Jamal made defamatory statements about her during a press conference on March 8 the same year. The statements were allegedly disseminated through print and electronic media, including Jamal’s Facebook page.

She claimed the remarks falsely implied that she had misused state funds for personal gain and portrayed her as unethical.
