Johor Bahru To Launch Free Self-Driving Bus For City Attractions

Date:

Residents of Johor Bahru will soon be able to take free rides on a self-driving bus to visit popular attractions across the city. Johor Bahru Mayor Haffiz Ahmad said the initiative is one of three smart-city projects planned by the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), supported by a RM2.78 million (S$880,000) allocation from the Digital Ministry.

“We are currently in the procurement process and hope to launch the bus in the first quarter of next year, just in time for Visit Johor 2026,” Haffiz told reporters after an MBJB full board meeting.

MBJB will coordinate with Tourism Johor and the Johor Public Transport Corporation to determine the best routes for the 20-seater autonomous bus, which is expected to cost around RM800,000. While the route is yet to be confirmed, the city plans to ensure it serves both locals and visitors efficiently, allowing them to explore key destinations safely and conveniently.

The self-driving bus will use sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G technology to navigate its routes.

In addition, MBJB is acquiring mobile, solar-powered CCTV units and AI-equipped drones to enhance city monitoring. “The CCTV will support operations such as tackling illegal dumping, while drones will help monitor flood-prone areas, illegal factories, polluted rivers, and traffic congestion,” Haffiz said.

These initiatives aim to modernize Johor Bahru’s infrastructure and improve public services, positioning the city as a forward-looking smart city.
