JPJ Cracks Down on Red-Light Violators: Regular Patrols and Stricter Enforcement Ahead

Date:

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has reaffirmed its commitment to consistently enforce traffic rules and increase public awareness to ensure compliance, particularly regarding red-light violations.

JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said traffic offenses, especially running red lights, remain a serious safety concern.

“Many people still violate red lights. Therefore, JPJ, in cooperation with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), will maintain regular patrols and conduct operations from time to time to strengthen compliance,” he said during an official JPJ visit to the Media Prima Berhad (MPB) newsroom today.

Also present were JPJ Selangor Director Azrin Borhan and JPJ Kuala Lumpur Director Hamidi Adam. The visit was hosted by MPB Group Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Syed Hussian Aljunid; Group Managing Director Datuk Mohd Rafiq Mat Razali; Media Prima Omnia Chief Operating Officer Datuk Effendi Omar; and Group Deputy Editor-in-Chief and New Straits Times Group Editor Farrah Naz Abdul Karim.

The statement comes amid calls from experts and social media users for stricter penalties against negligent drivers following the death of a 22-year-old woman in Napoh, Jitra, Kedah. Reports indicate that the victim was killed when a van allegedly ran a red light and collided with her motorcycle.

Datuk Aedy emphasized that the enforcement measures aim to ensure road safety and maintain high safety standards for all road users.

On another note, he explained the new tiered system for traffic summons payments, implemented on January 1. Under the scheme:

  • Payments made within 1–15 days incur only 50% of the fine. For example, a RM300 summons would cost RM150 if paid within this period.
  • Payments made within 16–30 days require 66% of the fine (RM200 for a RM300 summons).
  • Payments after 30 days must cover the full amount.

“This approach aligns with government directives to standardize summons payment methods across JPJ and PDRM,” he added.
