Karpal Singh’s Daughter Reshares 16-Year-Old Clip of her Father Criticizing Anwar

Date:

Sangeet Kaur Deo, daughter of the late Karpal Singh, recently resurfaced a 16-year-old clip of her father sharply criticizing Anwar Ibrahim.

Accompanied by the caption “Supaya kita tidak lupa” (So we do not forget), the video from a 2009 Malaysiakini press conference shows Karpal, then DAP chairman, condemning Anwar following Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) loss to Barisan Nasional (BN) in Perak.

PR’s defeat came after four of its assemblymen defected to BN, while Anwar’s attempts to woo BN assemblymen failed.

“Anwar telah menimbulkan masalah yang cukup besar untuk negara. Anwar Ibrahim harus bertaubat,” Karpal said in the video, accusing Anwar of creating significant problems for the nation and calling on him to repent.

Karpal, famously known as the “Harimau Jelutong”, also criticized PKR and DAP for allegedly succumbing to party-hopping practices.

“PKR dan DAP telah jatuh ke dalam godaan dan juga mengikut retorik Anwar dalam menyokong lompat parti, dan ada yang tidak berkata apa-apa sedangkan mereka sepatutnya berbuat demikian selama ini,” he said.

He further expressed frustration toward several DAP leaders, including Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng, whom he felt failed to support him.

“Saya kesal kerana saya tidak dapat (mendapatkan) sokongan, walaupun daripada pemimpin parti saya sendiri… Mereka sepatutnya menyokong saya, bukan membuat kenyataan menyokong Anwar,” Karpal said before his passing in a 2014 road accident.

Sangeet did not provide a reason for sharing the clip, though the timing comes after Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) poor performance in the recent Sabah state election and amid several corruption scandals surrounding Anwar’s administration.

DAP lost all eight seats it contested, with its sole victory in the state coming from Jamawi Jaafar, a former Gagasan Rakyat Sabah member.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke acknowledged the election result as a clear message from voters, noting the deep crisis of confidence facing the party and PH. He said DAP would gather feedback and work closely with the Prime Minister to accelerate reform agendas over the next six months.

Meanwhile, criticism of DAP continues to mount from both supporters and opponents, many claiming the party has lost its influence under the Madani administration.
