Umno has not yet received a formal application from Khairy Jamaluddin to rejoin the party, said secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
“Not yet,” he told reporters today when asked about the former Umno Youth chief’s possible return, on the sidelines of the Umno General Assembly.
Speculation over Khairy’s comeback intensified after he attended the party’s general assembly on Tuesday. Khairy, who was sacked three years ago, took part in the Umno Youth meeting at the invitation of the wing’s chief, Datuk Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said any re-entry by Khairy would require a formal application.
Khairy was expelled from the party in 2023 for allegedly disparaging and sabotaging Barisan Nasional’s campaign during the 15th General Election.
Last October, sources indicated that Khairy was expected to rejoin Umno ahead of the Sabah state election in November. The move reportedly had the personal approval of Zahid, who met Khairy during the wedding of Perlis Umno chief Datuk Rozabil Abd Rahman’s daughter.
