DAP advisor Lim Guan Eng has successfully won a defamation case against former Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin and two other parties.
Judicial Commissioner Shoba Menon ruled that statements made against the former finance minister were defamatory, according to Lim’s lawyer Datuk Sankara Nair.
The court found that the defendants failed to substantiate the legal defences they had raised during the trial. All three defendants were ordered to pay RM50,000 in global damages to Lim, as well as RM5,000 in legal costs.
Additionally, the court issued an injunction preventing the defendants from publishing further defamatory statements.
Lim had filed the suit at the Shah Alam High Court on 7 June 2024. The defendants named in the case were Zuraida, Muhammad Abd Ar-Rahman Koya, editor of MalaysiaNow, and MNow Media Sdn Bhd.
In his statement of claim, Lim alleged that Zuraida had made false statements about him regarding a housing project for former plantation workers in Bestari Jaya, Selangor.
During the proceedings, Lim was represented by Maniggandan Gopalan, while the defendants were represented by Nizamuddin Hamid.
