Malaysia And Türkiye Forge Strategic Alliance With Seven Major Agreements

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan today witnessed the signing of a series of agreements aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation between Malaysia and Türkiye across several key priority areas.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the seven agreements were signed in conjunction with Anwar’s three-day official visit to Türkiye, undertaken at the invitation of President Erdoğan.

Among the agreements signed at the Presidential Palace was a Joint Declaration on the Establishment of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, marking a significant step in deepening bilateral ties.

A letter of acceptance was also signed for the procurement of a Multi-Purpose Mission Ship between Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Desan Shipyard of Türkiye.

In the digital sector, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Information and Communication Technologies Authority of the Republic of Türkiye signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of information and communication technology (ICT).

Cooperation in research and strategic studies was strengthened through an MoU between the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS) and Türkiye’s Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research, covering political, economic and social fields.

Financial and investment collaboration was further enhanced with the signing of a Financial Cooperation MoU between EXIM Bank Malaysia and Turk Eximbank, as well as an Investment Cooperation MoU between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Invest Türkiye.

Both countries also exchanged the Minutes of the First Meeting of the Malaysia–Türkiye Joint Committee on Higher Education.

“The signing of these documents reflects the shared commitment of Malaysia and Türkiye to build a more structured, progressive and complementary bilateral relationship, grounded in strategic interests and long-term benefits for the people,” the statement said.

Anwar is on an official visit to Türkiye from Jan 6 to Jan 8. The highlight of the visit was his receipt of the Order of the Republic, one of Türkiye’s highest state honours.

The award was presented by President Erdoğan in recognition of Anwar’s contributions to strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two nations.

Anwar is accompanied by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and several Cabinet ministers, including Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir; and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
