Malaysia is set to welcome a new Indian consulate in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s endorsement of India’s plan, underscoring the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where Anwar expressed his full support for the diplomatic expansion. “As a sign of our strong relations, I have agreed to support India’s decision to open a consulate in Kota Kinabalu,” he said.
Both leaders highlighted that the new consulate would enhance people-to-people connections, improve consular services, and boost economic collaboration, particularly in East Malaysia. The mission is expected to foster closer cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, education, and cultural exchanges, while providing greater support for the Indian community and businesses in Sabah and surrounding regions.
Modi confirmed the move on social media, emphasising that the consulate would bring the two nations closer together. India’s External Affairs Ministry said the new mission would strengthen ongoing cooperation and expand outreach to the Indian diaspora in Malaysia.
Officials described the consulate as a key platform for promoting bilateral engagement and nurturing stronger ties between the peoples of both countries.
