Malaysia Calls for Calm and Offers Mediation After Deadly Thailand-Cambodia Border Clash

Date:

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has expressed deep concern over the recent military clash between Thailand and Cambodia along their disputed border, which occurred on July 24 and resulted in casualties. As the current ASEAN chair, Malaysia has called on both parties to exercise maximum restraint and take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions.

In a statement issued today, Mohamad Hasan reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to ASEAN principles of unity and good neighbourliness, stressing the importance of resolving border disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directly reached out to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, urging both leaders to agree to an immediate ceasefire to prevent further conflict and to create space for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic resolution,” he said.

He added that Malaysia, in its role as ASEAN chair, stands ready to facilitate mediation efforts to help both nations reach a mutually acceptable and peaceful solution to the dispute.

The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia flared up yesterday, with Thailand launching airstrikes on Cambodian military targets, while Cambodia responded with rocket and artillery fire. At least 11 civilians were reported killed, marking a serious escalation in the long-standing territorial dispute between the two nations.
