Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured Malaysians that the government will strive to maintain the RON95 petrol price at RM1.99 per litre, cushioning citizens from rising global fuel costs. Speaking at a gathering with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, highlighted that despite Brent crude reaching US$100 per barrel, Malaysia’s subsidised pricing system ensures local prices remain controlled.
He said, “We are still holding RON95 at RM1.99 and will take all possible measures to ensure this does not burden the rakyat.” The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks from Tehran.
Anwar stressed Malaysia’s opposition to aggressive or unilateral actions by nations. “We do not support violence, power grabs, or attempts to dominate other countries,” he added, expressing sympathy for nations impacted by the ongoing conflict.
The Prime Minister also confirmed communication with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, urging restraint to maintain stability among Islamic neighbouring nations. He encouraged Malaysians to plan their spending carefully and adopt prudent financial habits in anticipation of potential global economic uncertainty.
Attending the event were Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
This reassurance aims to balance local economic stability with the unpredictable volatility in global oil markets caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict and its potential impact on international energy supplies.
