Malaysia, in its capacity as Asean Chair, will convene a special meeting of Asean foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (Dec 22) to discuss the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand.
In a statement on Sunday, the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) said the meeting will be held following a decision reached by the prime ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand on Dec 11.
The special session will be chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and will serve as a platform for Asean foreign ministers to exchange views on recent developments between the two neighbouring countries.
According to Wisma Putra, the meeting will also explore possible steps Asean can take to support ongoing efforts toward de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities, with the aim of preserving peace and stability between the two Asean member states and across the wider region.
The ministry said the decision to convene the meeting underscores Asean’s commitment to unity, solidarity and centrality in maintaining regional peace, security and stability, in line with the Asean Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
“As Asean Chair, Malaysia remains firmly committed to promoting constructive dialogue in the Asean spirit,” the statement said.
It added that Malaysia will continue to facilitate engagement between both parties, encouraging adherence to international law, good neighbourly relations and peaceful coexistence, while supporting bilateral and multilateral cooperation toward a peaceful, just and lasting resolution of disputes.
