MCMC Slaps RM100,000 Fines on Sin Chew & Sinar Harian Over Flag & False Post

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has imposed fines of RM100,000 each on Sin Chew Media Corporation Bhd (Sin Chew) and Sinar Karangkraf Sdn Bhd (Sinar Karangkraf) after obtaining approval to compound the offences from the Attorney General’s Chambers.

In a statement today, MCMC said the action against Sin Chew followed an investigation that found the organisation had uploaded an incomplete illustration of the Jalur Gemilang on its digital newspaper.

The compound against Sinar Karangkraf was issued over a post on its official Instagram account containing false information about the Inspector-General of Police, which involved allegations relating to the top leadership of a local political party.

“Both investigations were conducted under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with penalties provided for under Section 233(2). The compounds were issued under Section 243 of the same Act,” the statement said.

MCMC emphasised that the Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of national sovereignty, unity and dignity that must always be displayed accurately and respectfully.

“The spread of false content involving national security institutions can undermine public order and erode public confidence in the authorities. All media organisations and social media users are reminded to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of published content, particularly when it involves national symbols,” it added.

MCMC said it will continue to strengthen enforcement and implement various digital literacy initiatives to safeguard national harmony and stability.
