The Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has recorded a surge in traffic violations during its 2026 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Special Operation, with beating red lights and mobile phone use emerging as the most prevalent offences. Conducted from 13 March to 29 March, the intensive enforcement exercise across the state revealed a blatant disregard for basic road safety among many holiday travellers. Selangor JPJ Director, Azrin Borhan, noted that many offenders attempted to justify their actions by claiming they were in a rush or had failed to notice signal changes before accelerating.
Distracted driving remains a critical concern for the department, as the persistent use of mobile phones while behind the wheel continues to contribute to high accident risks. Despite repeated public awareness campaigns, enforcement officers found that many drivers still prioritise digital connectivity over road safety. To combat this, a total of 334 personnel were deployed to strategic high-risk locations, industrial areas, and major highways to monitor driver behaviour throughout the festive period.
Statistical data from the operation shows that out of 45,140 vehicles inspected, enforcement action was taken against 1,789 units. In total, 6,688 separate offences were documented under the Road Transport Act 1987. Aside from moving violations, authorities identified a significant number of administrative lapses, including expired motor vehicle licences, driving without a valid licence, and a lack of insurance coverage. Technical malfunctions and vehicle overloading were also cited as frequent secondary infractions during the two-week period.
In a positive development, the department observed improved compliance among heavy goods vehicles, with only nine lorries found breaching regulations. Most commercial operators adhered to the strict guidelines regarding permitted cargo—such as petroleum and daily essentials—while empty lorries respected the 8:00 am to 8:00 pm operational window. Furthermore, undercover inspections conducted on express buses at depots and public terminals indicated that the majority of public transport drivers are becoming increasingly aware of the constant enforcement presence.
Moving forward, JPJ Selangor has identified 15 priority zones for daily monitoring to ensure a smooth flow of traffic as the festive season concludes. The department remains steadfast in its commitment to field enforcement, which includes stopping vehicles at safe intervals to issue compounds and notices. Director Azrin reminded the public that road safety is a shared responsibility, urging all motorists to maintain their vehicles in peak condition and strictly adhere to traffic laws to prevent avoidable tragedies on Malaysian roads.
