“No Need For Sympathy”: Tony Pua Says Malaysians Should Celebrate Najib Staying In Prison

Date:

Former Damansara MP Tony Pua said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) was proud of the High Court’s decision to reject former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application for house arrest, adding that there was no reason to sympathise with Najib.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Pua said both he and DAP took pride in having played a significant role in the downfall of what he described as a corrupt politician and in ensuring that Najib continues to serve his prison sentence.

“The DAP is proud, and I am proud, that we played an important part in this kleptocrat’s downfall and his continued imprisonment,” he said.

Pua added that Najib should instead be grateful, noting that he had already received a substantial reduction in both his sentence and fine from the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Pardons Board.

“There is absolutely no need to sympathise with someone like this,” he said.

He also responded to critics who urged DAP leaders to show “humanity”, saying those who still support Najib were free to do so, but should not prevent others from celebrating the upholding of justice.

“Those who continue to love him, no one is stopping you. But do not stop the rest of Malaysians from celebrating that justice has been served,” he said.

Pua further said he was looking forward to Najib’s upcoming court proceedings this Friday, where the former prime minister faces four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving more than RM2.27 billion linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
