PAS will nominate a candidate to take over the role of Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin’s decision to step down from the position effective Jan 1, 2026, the party’s information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said today.
The Pasir Mas MP said the candidate must be someone capable of uniting and strengthening all component parties within the coalition.
“I am confident PAS will propose a candidate from within the party to lead Perikatan Nasional. The individual does not necessarily need to be the party president, but must be someone trusted to unite the coalition and mobilise the strengths of all parties,” he said in a Facebook post.
Ahmad Fadhli added that PN would also undergo organisational restructuring, with greater focus on grassroots engagement and strengthening its machinery ahead of future elections.
He described Muhyiddin’s decision to relinquish the chairmanship as timely and prudent, saying the coalition requires fresh momentum as it prepares for the 16th general election.
He also congratulated Muhyiddin on his decision and extended his best wishes to the incoming PN chairman.
Earlier, Muhyiddin — who is also Bersatu president — announced that he would step down as PN chairman amid rising internal tensions within the opposition coalition.
According to party sources quoted by Berita Harian, the former prime minister informed members of Bersatu’s supreme leadership council of his decision through a WhatsApp message last night.
