The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has stressed that its priority in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16) is securing victory, not naming the 11th Prime Minister candidate.
PAS Central Ulama Council Chief, Datuk Ahmad Yahaya, however, expressed confidence that the time will eventually come for a PAS leader to be entrusted with leading the federal government.
“Our main focus is to win the election. We must ensure the election machinery and strategy are effective, and first topple the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional government. Only after that will it be decided who is suitable. Moreover, the position of Prime Minister must have the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said after attending the PAS Youth Muktamar last night.
Sharing his personal view, Ahmad said, “When the time comes, PAS will have a Prime Minister. At that point, a leader will be chosen.”
Commenting on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) decision to name its candidate for the 11th Prime Minister at its Annual General Assembly last Saturday, Ahmad said it was the party’s right to do so.
Ahmad, who is also the PAS Commissioner for Kedah, explained that PAS too has the same space to bring forward motions at its Muktamar.
“That was Bersatu’s AGM. So, its members and leadership have the right to table motions and share their views on the country’s future. Within Perikatan Nasional (PN), of course, decisions must be made collectively. But at the party level, PAS can put forward motions, just as Gerakan or any other party can,” he said.
