The Tasek Gelugor Pas Youth wing has called on the party’s leadership to sever its alliance with Bersatu, accusing the party of betrayal and backstabbing in connection with the political turmoil in Perlis.
In a statement, its chief Mohamad Ikhwan Afiq Mohamad Anwar also urged Pas to take “appropriate action” against Bersatu appointees in states governed by Perikatan Nasional (PN), although he did not elaborate on the specific measures being proposed.
The call follows growing dissatisfaction among some Pas leaders over the appointment of Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah as the new Perlis menteri besar.
Abu Bakar replaced Pas assemblyman Mohd Shukri Ramli, who stepped down citing health reasons, shortly after five Bersatu and three Pas assemblymen withdrew their support for him.
Ikhwan said Pas should also consider contesting and reclaiming all parliamentary and state seats previously won by Bersatu candidates under the PN and Pas banners.
“This move is justified following acts of betrayal and backstabbing by Bersatu at both the federal level and in Perlis,” he said, alleging that Bersatu had conspired to remove Mohd Shukri from office.
He further accused Bersatu of riding on Pas’ grassroots strength and exploiting the concept of ummah unity for political advantage.
“The time has come for Pas to be firm and courageous in ending its ties with Bersatu,” Ikhwan said, adding that such incidents had occurred repeatedly despite Pas’ continued efforts to preserve political cooperation in the name of Muslim unity.
According to him, Bersatu had shown little sincerity or appreciation for the alliance, treating Pas merely as a vehicle to win elections and secure political gains.
