The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Penang will summon more individuals to record their statements as part of its investigation into alleged abuse of power involving a senior state government official over a land purchase funded by zakat monies.
Penang MACC director S Karunanithy said this after attending a Thaipusam celebration event in George Town today, according to Bernama.
“Yes, we will be calling in several other individuals to assist with the case. I cannot comment further as we are currently conducting a thorough investigation,” he said.
The probe was reportedly initiated after a state assemblyman raised the issue during a state legislative assembly sitting late last year.
An MACC team has visited several offices to obtain relevant documents, which are now under examination. Statements have also been recorded from two individuals believed to be linked to the case.
Karunanithy said the investigation is being carried out under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which relates to the use of office or position for gratification.
Yesterday, the Penang state government said it would give full space to the MACC to carry out its investigation. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was also quoted as saying that the state government would not interfere with the probe or conduct any internal investigation.
