Perlis MB Signals Possible Assembly Dissolution Over No-Confidence Move

Date:

Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has hinted that the Perlis State Legislative Assembly could be dissolved if a motion of no confidence against him is tabled during the upcoming sitting scheduled for early next month.

Speaking to reporters after officiating the Citrawarna Kuala Perlis 2026 event last night, Abu Bakar said he would not hesitate to dissolve the assembly if there were attempts to topple the current state government.

“If there are efforts to bring a vote of no confidence during the next assembly sitting, then we will dissolve the assembly. What is the issue?

“If the motion succeeds, I will dissolve the Perlis State Legislative Assembly. That is my decision,” he said.

He was responding to remarks by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang regarding the possibility of reviewing Bersatu’s role within Perikatan Nasional (PN) ahead of the next general election.

Despite the speculation, Abu Bakar stressed that the PN-led administration in Perlis remains stable for now.

“We are still part of the Perikatan Nasional government and continue to maintain good relations within the coalition.

“Sometimes rumours and political alignments should not be taken too seriously because political situations can change over time,” he added.

Abu Bakar also said his appointment as Menteri Besar was made under the mandate given to PN following the previous change in the state administration.

“We were entrusted by the Raja of Perlis to defend the PN government, and my appointment as Menteri Besar was also under the Perikatan Nasional administration,” he said.

Earlier, Abdul Hadi reportedly said PAS was evaluating possible action involving Bersatu if the party was found to be affecting PN’s political stability ahead of the next general election.

The upcoming Perlis state assembly sitting had previously been postponed amid growing speculation over the state’s political situation.
