Pakatan Harapan (PH) has reiterated that individuals convicted of corruption or abuse of power, particularly those involved in high-profile cases, should serve the full sentences handed down by the courts.
In a Facebook statement on Tuesday night, the coalition also stressed that the rule of law required ongoing court proceedings to be allowed to run their course independently and in an orderly manner.
“Any decision involving high-profile cases must take into account public confidence in the country’s commitment to implementing the agenda,” it said.
PH said previous high-profile corruption cases had harmed Malaysia’s international standing, while recent efforts to strengthen institutions and governance had helped restore public confidence.
The coalition also voiced support for the government’s efforts to tackle corruption, financial leakages and abuse of power, while reaffirming its commitment to institutional reforms.
The statement came ahead of a reported meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board scheduled for Friday.
Sin Chew Daily reported that a fresh pardon application by jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was expected to be among the matters before the board.
However, PH did not name Najib, refer directly to the reported pardon application or mention the Pardons Board meeting in its statement.
