Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has described the fatal accident involving a Form One student at SMK Tanjong Mas in Kota Bharu as a tragic reminder for all parties to remain cautious and avoid negligence in daily actions.
In a post on X, Anwar expressed his condolences to the family of 13-year-old victim Nur Fatimatul Hawa Mohd Azaudin, who was killed in the incident, and also prayed for a swift recovery for another student who was seriously injured.
He said the tragedy should serve as an important lesson on road safety and personal responsibility, especially in environments involving children and school premises.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek confirmed that the Ministry of Education (KPM) has initiated an internal investigation to examine compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) at the school, alongside ongoing investigations by the authorities.
She said the ministry had received the heartbreaking news of the student’s death and extended condolences on behalf of the education community, urging strength and resilience for the affected family during this difficult time.
Fadhlina added that the Kelantan State Education Department is also coordinating assistance for the victim’s family, with focus placed on welfare support for those involved.
Earlier, Kota Bharu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azmir Damiri said the incident occurred at about 1.50pm when a woman driving within the school compound is believed to have mistakenly pressed the accelerator, causing the vehicle to lose control.
The car then struck two students who were wearing their shoes in front of the surau before crashing into a stone pillar. The 13-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another student sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
