Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has officially declared Malaysia’s unwavering support for Qatar’s sovereignty following a series of attacks targeting the Ras Laffan Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) complex. During a high-level telephone conversation with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Anwar described the energy infrastructure as a “critical asset” essential to the health of the global economy.
Both leaders expressed deep concern over the escalating security situation in the Middle East. Anwar emphasized that Malaysia and Qatar are in full agreement regarding the urgent need for all parties to de-escalate tensions. He stressed the importance of returning to dialogue and diplomatic channels to ensure long-term regional stability and prevent further disruption to international markets.
Ras Laffan stands as the world’s largest LNG export terminal, accounting for approximately 20 per cent of the global supply. The attack on March 18 resulted in a significant supply disruption of roughly 5.8 million tonnes for the month. Given that 90 per cent of Qatar’s LNG exports are destined for the Asian market, any instability at this facility poses a direct threat to energy security across the continent.
Beyond security and economic concerns, Anwar took the opportunity to exchange Eid al-Fitr greetings and offer his deepest condolences regarding a recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Qatari Armed Forces personnel and Turkish citizens. He expressed Malaysia’s heartfelt solidarity with the families of the victims involved in the tragedy.
In a statement shared on social media, the Prime Minister prayed for the swift restoration of peace in the Middle East for the sake of global well-being. This diplomatic outreach underscores Malaysia’s active role in supporting its strategic partners and safeguarding international economic interests that rely heavily on stable energy supplies from Qatar.
