The government will amend the Tabung Haji Act 1995 (Act 535) to strengthen governance and ensure the interests and trust of Malaysian Muslims continue to be protected, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the amendment would form part of the Madani Government’s efforts to strengthen institutional governance and ensure weaknesses within public institutions are addressed firmly.
“Governance must continue to be strengthened, institutions must be cleansed and every weakness must be rectified decisively. The Tabung Haji Act will be amended to safeguard the trust placed by Muslims,” he said in a Facebook post.
In the same statement, Anwar also called for the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU) to be fully repealed, without replacing it with another law that would continue restricting students’ freedom to express their views.
He said the Madani Government would continue working to ensure economic growth translates into better living conditions for Malaysians, regardless of their political affiliations or the states they live in.
Anwar stressed that people living in states governed by the opposition should also receive proper attention and support, saying the government’s responsibility extends to all Malaysians rather than being limited to its supporters or particular states.
His remarks came as the 2026 PKR National Congress concluded on Sunday. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said the party had chosen to uphold principles, idealism and the courage to do what is right.
He stressed that PKR would not sacrifice its principles or abandon its reform agenda simply to retain political power.
According to Anwar, PKR must remain a platform for all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or region, with the principle of justice demonstrated through policies and concrete action.
“The strength of Keadilan depends on a clean team, firm leadership and organised efforts. Power is not a tool to enrich oneself, one’s family or cronies, but a trust to defend the people, uphold justice and raise human dignity,” he said.
