Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all parties not to exploit the recent deaths of Zara Qairina Mahathir and Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman for personal or political purposes.
Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly, Anwar expressed concern over misinformation and social media speculation that had stirred unnecessary public anxiety.
“Social media, especially when emotions are heightened, can amplify the spread of false information. I have reminded Parliament not to exploit tragedies for gain — membina mahligai di pusara,” he said.
He cited the recent case of an individual who falsely posed as a pathologist online, misleading millions and spreading panic. “This misinformation was later weaponised for political agendas, which is unacceptable. We must not mislead the public or take advantage of someone’s death for politics,” he stressed.
Anwar acknowledged the difficulty of fully regulating social media but emphasised the importance of responsible discourse, urging restraint and respect in handling sensitive cases.
