Perikatan Nasional (PN) is confident the issue surrounding the Registrar of Societies (RoS) suspension of all its activities can be resolved within two weeks, according to its secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
He said PN has 30 days, or until October 22, to respond to RoS over a complaint filed by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) concerning the coalition.
Takiyuddin said PN’s leadership is currently discussing the matter and preparing its response and explanation for the regulator.
“We have 30 days or one month. We are discussing the responses and explanations to be given to RoS. Perhaps we can resolve this matter within two weeks,” he told reporters after officiating the Cakna Rakyat Carnival at the Bunut Payong state constituency in Lembah Sireh on Sunday.
He added that his lawyers had written to the RoS director-general requesting a meeting between the regulator and PN’s leadership to clarify the reasons behind the suspension and allow the coalition to present its position.
“We sent the letter to him the day before yesterday. As the agency overseeing organisations, when action is taken against an organisation, we hope they will give us an opportunity to meet.
“We want an explanation and we also want to provide our explanation. The important thing is that we need to meet. If we cannot meet him, who else are we supposed to meet?” he said.
Asked whether the RoS suspension would help achieve Bersatu’s objectives, Takiyuddin said the matter should be addressed to the party itself.
“Whether its objectives have been achieved or not, you have to ask Bersatu. But remember that Bersatu is also part of the state governments in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah.
“I do not want to comment further. You should ask the respective state governments. They are in state governments led by PAS,” he said.
RoS was previously reported to have ordered the suspension of all PN activities under subsection 13(2A) of the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832), citing the need to safeguard the organisation’s interests and prevent further breaches of its constitution.
Despite the suspension, Takiyuddin said it would not affect ongoing PAS negotiations with Barisan Nasional (BN) ahead of the Melaka state election.
He said discussions with BN were progressing smoothly and had now reached more than 50 per cent completion.
Takiyuddin said the negotiations were based on the principle of “unity of the ummah”, or unity among Malay and Muslim communities, which has been repeatedly emphasised by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
“This unity has been accepted by the majority of Malaysians, including among non-Malays.
“This is because unity and solidarity create stability. Everyone wants stability, whether politically or economically. So, we have no problem,” he said.
