PN Demands Special Parliament Sitting After Malaysia-US Trade Agreement Nullified

Date:

Perikatan Nasional (PN) has urged a special parliamentary session to address the fallout from the nullification of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Malaysia and the United States.

In a statement today, PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan warned that the development could affect Malaysia’s export sectors, manufacturing industries, supply chains, and overall investment certainty. He stressed that the move raises pressing questions about prior government negotiations and commitments under the agreement.

“Amid growing global trade uncertainty, it is vital to provide clarity on Malaysia’s policy direction and reassure investors,” Takiyuddin said. He added that the US Supreme Court ruling, which invalidated broad tariff measures introduced during the Trump administration, underscores the need for caution and thorough evaluation before entering international trade agreements.

The opposition coalition called on the government to brief Parliament on the current status of ART, its economic and diplomatic implications, and steps taken to protect national interests. It also requested transparency regarding any concessions or commitments made during previous negotiations affecting Malaysia–US trade relations.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani confirmed yesterday that the ART is no longer valid following the US Supreme Court decision in February.
