The police have urged that any demonstrations opposing the visit of U.S. President Donald Trump during the 47th ASEAN Summit be called off to protect the country’s image and ensure the safety of international delegates.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail emphasized that the summit period is not an appropriate time for protests, as all attention is focused on national security and protocol.
“The police advise that the demonstration should not go ahead because the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) area is classified as a security-controlled zone and is a key focal point for foreign delegations. Holding such an event is inappropriate while Malaysia is hosting, as it could affect the country’s image and disrupt the smooth running of the summit,” he said after observing a rehearsal for the delegates.
He added that the police have engaged with groups intending to hold protests, advising that if they are determined to proceed, they should relocate to a more suitable venue, such as Padang Merbok, rather than the convention centre.
“Large gatherings around the convention centre could compromise security control and interfere with convoy movements and the protocol arrangements for international delegates attending the summit,” Khalid said.
He stressed that the police are not restricting the right to assemble but are asking for cooperation to avoid any protests during the ASEAN Summit week.
“The police respect the right to assemble as provided under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, but it must be done in an orderly manner without jeopardizing public safety. We will not compromise with anyone who organizes a demonstration in a prohibited area. We also advise the public not to be swayed by provocations or calls to join unauthorized assemblies,” he added.
Previously, media reports indicated that some parties, including PAS, had planned a demonstration to protest Trump’s visit.
For reference, the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings are scheduled to be held at KLCC from 26 to 28 October and are expected to bring together world leaders including President Trump, as well as leaders from China, Japan, and ASEAN member states.
