Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep sorrow over the recent earthquake in Afghanistan, which claimed numerous lives and left families mourning and struggling in its aftermath.
He also voiced sadness upon learning of a devastating landslide in Sudan that reportedly killed more than 1,000 people.
“My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones,” he said in a post on his official social media account on Wednesday.
In his statement, Anwar affirmed Malaysia’s solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and Sudan during these tragic times.
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan at 11:47 p.m. local time on August 31, with its epicenter located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, at a depth of eight kilometers.
Official reports indicate that over 1,400 people were killed, more than 3,000 injured, and thousands of homes destroyed, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country in recent years.
Meanwhile, in Sudan, a massive landslide completely destroyed the village of Tarasin in the Marrah Mountains, Darfur. The incident, which occurred last Sunday, is believed to have claimed more than 1,000 lives, with only one survivor reported.
