Proton S70 Named Official Taxi Model Under Madani Reform Programme

Date:

The Proton S70 has been officially selected as the new taxi model under the National Madani Taxi Reform Programme, in a move aimed at modernising Malaysia’s taxi industry.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the choice was made based on the sedan’s safety features, passenger comfort and fuel efficiency, making it well-suited for daily public transport operations.

He added that the initiative is part of wider efforts to improve the image and competitiveness of the taxi sector, which has long relied on older vehicle models.

Under the new scheme, taxis will adopt a refreshed design without the traditional roof-mounted taxi topper and will carry a special registration series beginning with the letters “GET”.

The reform also introduces a new financing model that allows drivers to own their vehicles outright, replacing the previous leasing system commonly used in the industry.

To further boost drivers’ income, the ministry will work with private sector partners to introduce in-car digital advertising screens as an additional revenue source.

The initiative will also be integrated with digital booking platforms, strengthening connections between traditional taxis and modern e-hailing systems.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched the programme at Dataran Merdeka today.
