The restructuring of National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan repayments will not affect borrowers’ housing loans or other personal financing, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said.
He explained that the measure applies only to borrowers who have made no repayments and have not contacted PTPTN to discuss their financial situation.
“I have always emphasised that we are guided by the principle of compassion. We do not want borrowers to feel that repaying PTPTN loans is an overwhelming burden. Those facing financial difficulties are encouraged to come forward and discuss their situation,” he said.
Zambry added that he has conveyed this directive to PTPTN and that its chief executive officer, Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid, can confirm the government’s position in providing room for discussion and flexibility.
He was speaking to reporters after presenting assistance to 1,350 students under the Back to School Programme at Dewan Merdeka here today.
In a separate matter, Zambry said the National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN), which has now accumulated about RM20 billion in savings, reflects growing awareness among parents about the importance of saving for their children’s education.
“The response to SSPN has been very encouraging, with dividends increasing every year. I urge parents and the public to save through SSPN to help secure their children’s educational future,” he said.
He added that in addition to PTPTN loans, the government offers various initiatives to support students, particularly those from low-income families, in pursuing higher education, including the Siswa Sulung programme.
