Putrajaya MP Urges Government To Clarify Work From Home Details For Civil Servants

Date:

The federal government has been called upon to release comprehensive details regarding the proposed Work From Home (WFH) initiative for the civil service to eliminate existing ambiguity. Member of Parliament for Putrajaya, Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin, noted that public servants have been left waiting for specific instructions since the initial proposal was announced on 13 March. Speaking via a video shared on his TikTok account this Saturday, the MP questioned the administrative delay in implementing the policy and urged for immediate clarification to ensure the workforce understands the operational framework of the decision.

The initiative was previously highlighted by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who indicated that the Cabinet would deliberate on the WFH proposal for the public sector during a meeting on 17 March. This discussion was prompted by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Following this, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed on Thursday that the government is currently evaluating additional measures, including the phased and selective introduction of flexible working arrangements for civil servants.

During his statement, the Prime Minister expressed hope that the implementation would provide much-needed flexibility within the public sector. He further encouraged private sector employers, including banking institutions and corporations that have previously adopted such models, to consider following suit. The government’s current focus remains on identifying which departments and roles are most suited for these flexible arrangements without compromising essential public service delivery.

Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin, who formerly served as the Senior Education Minister, emphasised that the remote working policy is a vital tool for alleviating the financial pressures faced by the Rakyat. He argued that with the current rise in global fuel prices, such an initiative would serve a dual purpose of national interest and individual welfare. By reducing the frequency of commuting, the policy could effectively lower overall domestic fuel consumption, potentially extending the nation’s energy reserves during a period of global volatility.

Beyond the macroeconomic benefits, the MP highlighted the direct impact on the disposable income of employees across the country. He pointed out that working from home would allow staff to significantly cut down on recurring daily expenses, such as petrol, toll charges, and parking fees. By providing these details swiftly, the government would enable civil servants to better plan their finances and daily schedules amidst the ongoing global energy crisis and rising cost of living.
