The implementation of the new electricity tariff in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan will begin tomorrow, with the average base tariff adjusted to 39.70 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh), up from the previous rate of 34.52 sen per kWh.
According to an infographic released by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (Sabah Electricity), 85 per cent of domestic consumers with monthly electricity usage of up to 600 kWh will see an increase in their minimum bills ranging from RM0 to RM27, depending on consumption levels.
For small commercial users, the protected electricity consumption block will continue up to 500 kWh per month, with the minimum bill increase capped between RM0 and RM24. This includes small retailers and micro businesses.
To help ease the impact of the new tariff, various rebates and discounts have been introduced, including a RM40 monthly rebate for heads of households classified as hardcore poor under the e-Kasih system.
Sabah Electricity is also offering a 10 per cent discount to welfare homes, houses of worship and registered educational institutions. In addition, a 20 per cent discount under the Off-Peak Tariff Rider (OPTR) mechanism will be provided to low-voltage commercial and industrial users who consume electricity outside peak hours.
In support of strategic sectors, a new 10 per cent discount has also been introduced for the agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries sectors to help ensure stability in the food supply chain.
Consumers are encouraged to participate in the Energy Efficiency Programme by adopting more prudent energy usage to reduce the impact of higher bills and support the transition to renewable energy.
More detailed information on the new tariff schedule and estimated monthly bills is available on the company’s official website at www.sesb.com.my/tariff, including access to an electricity bill calculator.
