Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has stressed that all parties must comply with the law, including matters related to land use and the construction of places of worship.
In a Facebook post today, Sultan Ibrahim highlighted that the building of a temple should follow the same legal procedures as the construction of mosques, churches, or Chinese temples.
The King reflected on his experience in January 2018, when he personally mediated the issue of a temple demolition in Johor, resolving it amicably, respectfully, and in accordance with the law.
“I personally addressed the matter in a fair manner and advised all involved to always comply with the law to prevent undesirable incidents and maintain public order,” he said.
Sultan Ibrahim emphasised that Islam promotes mutual respect among people and does not prevent followers of other religions from practising their faith. Likewise, adherents of other religions should show respect towards Islam. He added that such mutual respect is essential to prevent misunderstandings, tensions, and provocations, while strengthening unity among Malaysia’s diverse communities.
Accordingly, the King said any issue involving the construction of a temple or other houses of worship should be handled through lawful channels to preserve harmony, tolerance, and goodwill. He warned against politicising religious matters, noting that such actions could threaten national unity, social cohesion, and stability in the multi-ethnic country.
Sultan Ibrahim reiterated that Malaysia was founded on harmony, and the nation’s strength lies in respect, tolerance, and adherence to the law. He urged all citizens to uphold these values for the collective benefit of society and avoid statements or actions that could spark division or disrupt peace.
Earlier, Sultan Ibrahim received Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang at Istana Negara.
