Thailand’s House of Representatives is set to vote tomorrow to elect a new prime minister following the ousting of Paetongtarn Shinawatra last week.
“The Speaker has added a special agenda for the immediate election of a prime minister under Article 159 of the Constitution,” said the House Secretariat.
Yesterday, the Bhumjaithai Party submitted a motion to the House for an urgent vote to select a new prime minister. On the same day, the ruling Pheu Thai Party requested royal consent to dissolve Parliament after failing to secure a majority to form a government.
The move comes after opposition People’s Party announced support for Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister and pledged to join efforts to form a new administration.
However, local media reported that the royal decree to dissolve Parliament, submitted by interim Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, was returned by the Privy Council Office on legal grounds.
