Thousands of Israelis took to the streets in Tel Aviv on Saturday, calling on opposition parties to work with Arab parties to remove Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from power.
According to Al Jazeera, the demonstration at Habima Square came amid a political deadlock over forming a government following the general election.
Protesters urged opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot to reconsider his refusal to cooperate with Arab parties, which could help his bloc secure a parliamentary majority.
However, Netanyahu’s supporters staged a counter-demonstration to oppose the proposed cooperation.
The election results saw Netanyahu’s bloc secure 53 seats, while Eisenkot’s alliance won 48 of the 120 seats in Parliament.
Arab parties won 19 seats, potentially giving Eisenkot the support needed to command a 67-seat majority.
Despite the possibility of securing enough support, the formation of a new government remains uncertain due to political differences among the parties involved.
Netanyahu has also accused Arab parties of election fraud, although the allegation has yet to be proven.
