Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will face a straight contest against Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Dr Azizul Hakim Mahdi for the Rantau state seat in the Negri Sembilan election on Aug 1.
Rembau parliamentary election returning officer Mohd Zamri Mohd Esa confirmed that Mohamad, who has represented the constituency since 2004, will defend the seat against the PH challenger.
Mohamad, popularly known as Tok Mat, has maintained his position as the Rantau assemblyman for more than two decades and is seeking another term in the upcoming state polls.
In the previous state election, Mohamad retained the seat after defeating Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Rozmal Malakan with a majority of 10,280 votes.
The Rantau contest is expected to draw attention as it involves one of BN’s key leaders defending a long-held stronghold in Negri Sembilan.
The state election will see candidates competing for 36 state seats, with voters set to cast their ballots on Aug 1.
